David Attenborough for Prime Minister

This poster presents a possible future in politics. A few years ago, the comedian Coluche was silenced during the presidential contest and even if the chances of seeing a non-politician being elected are ridiculously slim, the possibility is to be encouraged. Is Zinedine referencing the Marseille native, Zinédine Zidane? or could it be ANOTHER Zinedine? After all, who knew Obama a year and a half before he became President? The poster also incorporates a Marianne (the representation of the French state), based on a design by Excoffon which was intended for postage stamps but never put into production. The practice of the symbolic figure of the Marianne being based on real people has lead to instances of Laetitia Casta, Catherine Deneuve or Brigitte Bardot being used as models for busts in town halls but should the muse’s own political views be obscured once she has become a formal model?

This poster is part of the project …avec Excoffon: seven A1 posters fly-posted around Marseille, to commemorate the centenary of the Marseille typographer Roger Excoffon (1910-83). The other posters are by Fiona Banner, Martin Firrell, Ryan Gander, Liam Gillick, Stéphane Le Mercier and Laure Prouvost.
